Ductless Heating and Cooling Solution for Media Room in Dallas
This beautiful mid-century home – located in the Lakewood area of Dallas – was built with a large three-car garage with a dedicated media room over it. Because the media room is over an unconditioned garage, it presents a heating and cooling challenge.

The Design
The owners of this home purchased the house with a freshly remodeled media room over a detached three-car garage. It was equipped with a two-ton Samsung wall-mounted unit installed directly above an 85” flat-screen television. The customers realized that the system didn’t have enough power to keep the space cool and weren’t happy with the look of the large wall-mounted unit directly above the television.
The homeowners reached out to Benchmark Service on the recommendation of their air-conditioning technician. Jack Schmidt of Benchmark Service met with the homeowners and evaluated the space for the best possible placement and equipment sizing for their needs. Mr. Schmidt proposed that two stylish MLZ ceiling cassettes for heating and cooling will be installed at each end of the media room.
The Installation
A single, three-ton, multi-zone outdoor unit was installed in the location of the undersized Samsung unit for Heating and Cooling, with line-sets run to the gable-end of the building and through the attic space to each indoor unit. The Kumo Cloud internet connectivity system was installed to provide the homeowner with instant access to the Mitsubishi air-conditioning system from anywhere in the world via his smartphone.
The Benefits
The MLZ-Series Ceiling Cassette is a product that is exclusive to Mitsubishi. It is unique in that it will fit between standard 16” centered ceiling jousts. It is only 7-3/8” deep. It has integral access panels and requires no access from above, which also allows it to be installed below floors. It also has a built-in Mitsubishi condensate pump that is silent and reliable for Heating and Cooling.
It has won the 2018 Architectural Product Innovation Award and the “This Old House” 2019 Best Home Products Award, as well as many other accolades.
