Historic Winnetka Heights Home in Dallas, TX gets Ductless A/C

Historic Winnetka Heights Home

The owners of this 4,000 sq. ft., 2 story home loved the location of their house. Their neighborhood is filled with a rich history and friendly faces, so it was a perfect place for raising of family. However, like many homes in the area, because it was constructed in 1913, it did not have a modern central HVAC system installed when it was built. Instead, the house relied on a large, unsightly package unit air conditioner with ductwork ran underneath the home. The system was loud, inefficient, and expensive to operate. Some areas of the home had drastically different temperatures than others.

When planning a complete remodel of their home, the homeowners decided to look into options for a better heating and cooling solution. While looking for a contractor, the homeowners discovered that Benchmark Service has the title of the #1 Elite Diamond Dealer in North Texas, so they knew that Benchmark Service would be capable of providing the high-quality installation and air conditioning that they craved.

The Problem:

The Solution:

The existing system was loud, inefficient, and delivered poor performance due to the restrictive ductwork that was located in a crawlspace underneath the home.

Benchmark Service designed a system with four independent zones using stylish and unobtrusive ceiling cassettes as well as four independent quiet and compact Mitsubishi outdoor units.

The Design

When Benchmark Service met with the family, they could see that a multi-zone, ductless system would be the best fit for their home. The areas being served were an open concept with kitchen, dining room, living room, and music room. Each of these areas received a 1 and a half-ton Mitsubishi ceiling cassette, with each paired to an independent, high-efficiency Mitsubishi outdoor unit.

The Installation

Unlike traditional HVAC systems, the ductless system from Mitsubishi Electric does not require ductwork to be installed throughout the home. Instead, small tubing is piped through the walls, like electrical wiring, to connect the indoor ceiling cassettes to the outdoor condensers. The indoor units are mounted flush in the ceiling, where they can provide the best airflow throughout the room. The units were installed in a way to provide the most unobtrusive and aesthetically pleasing visual representation possible.

The Benefits

Each of the four ductless A/C’s operates independently from the other units, which allows the family to have pinpoint control over their comfort. Each of the rooms can maintain a different temperature to keep the occupants comfortable without causing a strain to a centralized system because each unit is able to sense the temperature of the space that it resides. It can adjust its output to meet the demand in that room.

For example, when cooking a large meal in the kitchen, the system in that area will sense the need to deliver more air into that area without delivering excessive cool air to the unoccupied areas. The same is true for the music room, which has a southern exposure and lots of windows. As the sun moves throughout the day, the system in that area will adjust to provide constant comfort.

Additionally, individual units can be turned off if they are not in use, then the homeowners can save money by choosing not to cool or heat that room when it is not in use. Because of the Mitsubishi Ductless system’s efficiency, the family will save on their monthly energy bills throughout the year. In the summer, they will no longer have to overpay for their air conditioning, because the ductless system only costs about the same as a lightbulb to run.

Another benefit of the Mitsubishi Ductless system is that it is whisper-quiet, so the family will no longer have to talk over the loud, package-unit A/C system or be awakened at night when the system kicks on. Instead, they’ll enjoy quiet comfort throughout the year without the drawbacks of other HVAC systems. Contact us!
